I began back in 2008 with a phpbb reseller host, i dont remember the name but you signed up and they set up a phpbb forum just for you automatically, you could also pay for extra features. I dont even know if this is still a thing now or not.
Anyway, once i got familar with it and decided to install my own phpbb site on my own server i was off to the races. In the years since i have used other forum software as it was either suggested or bragged to be the best so i tried it, have written my own forum software from scratch using bare bones php, html, js, css as a personal project to see if i could do it. That turned out good but phpbb has many more features that i did not want to code.
So regardless, i always end up comming back to phpbb. I wont mention any names but the last forum software i tried was suggested to me by a very respected programmer and it was junk, had not been updated since 2016, could not do many of the things that phpbb does easily. And building mods for it, forget about it, it was a sesspool of framework after framework with no end in sight. And they had no approval process at all. Phpbb makes it easy to to create extensions (mods) and they test them and have a serious approval program before anyone can download and use it.
I learned dont take phpbb for granted, you may think the other side of the fence is golden but unless there is something out there that i am not aware of, phpbb is the best, at least for my needs since 2008. I have also installed phpbb for customers and they love it as well.
The one thing i always hear about phpbb from those that hate it is "its already been cracked and hacked and its totally unsafe". First of all once i got the rest of the story i discovered there was one instance back in the early 2000's that there was an issue and it was not even that big of an issue. But nothing has happened since as far as i am aware. So those crackpots that toss that in your face about phpbb as the first thing out of their mouths dont know what they are talking about.
I really dont want to go into what all happened back in the early 2000's but im sure you can discover the real story if you ask around. I just dont feel like covering it here.
